Firefighters responded around 3:30 a.m., Thursday, April 4 to a report of a fire at 308 Main Street in Beacon, the City of Beacon Fire Department said.

The first truck pulled on the scene within a minute and a half and found a three-story structure with All You Knead Artisan Bakers bakery on the first floor, two floors of apartments and a rear apartment, they said.

The fire was discovered by a baker who arrived at work and found light smoke in the kitchen and called 911, the department said.

Firefighters searched the entire building before discovering a fire in the kitchen of the rear apartment.

After forcing open the door, firefighters found a person asleep in a rear bedroom. They removed the person from the building who was then evaluated for injuries but was not transported to a hospital, the department added.

Firefighters were able to quickly knock down the fire and ventilated the apartment. The fire was confined to the kitchen area with smoke damage throughout the apartment.

The two smoke detectors in the apartment had been removed from the ceilings preventing the occupant of early detection of the fire, and the ability to self-evacuate, the department added.

The Village of Fishkill Fire Department assisted on the scene.
